In the pouring rain, I saw a dog.
A black dog. Shaggy, dirty, alone.
I thought about calling to him. Soaked to the bone,
tail between his legs, friendless.
I stood there watching, as he trudged,
slipping on the cold, wet pavement.
—
Turning away, I saw myself
reflected in a puddle in the gutter.
How I hate those eyes staring back at me.
They know me. They see who I am.
A dog, trudging through the rain, slipping and stumbling in the dark.
